Acupressure (or Shiatsu) uses a variety of techniques to manipulate the same points used in acupuncture treatments. The only difference is that acupressure is done with fingers instead of acupuncture needles. In the majority of cases, acupressure is very effective, and its results rival those treated with acupuncture. For example, in China, acupressure has been used as an anesthetic in dentistry. Three acupuncture points are pressed for just ten minutes before the teeth are pulled, resulting in neither pain nor infection. In addition, acupressure is also used to treat gastrointestinal disorders and insomnia, and is a good alternative treatment option for those with significant fear of needles.
